Perto da Guarda, uma região cuja produção têxtil foi impulsionada pelo Marquês de Pombal, a aldeia de Maçainhas já viveu da fabricação destes cobertores outrora muito populares. Fundada em 1966, esta fábrica de cobertores é hoje a última no país a produzi-los. Sazonalmente, no Verão, a lã churra, grossa e comprida de ovelhas locais, é fiada e tecida num velho tear inteiramente manual. Vai ao pisão para lavar e feltrar, depois à máquina de cardar, que lhe puxa o pelo, sendo por fim esticadas para secarem ao sol. Só assim se obtém o verdadeiro cobertor de papa, consistente e muito quente, seja de cor lisa ou padrão colorido, com o seu característico pêlo comprido.
Maçainhas village (near Guarda, where Marquês de Pombal initiated textile production) used to earn a living from the production of these – once very popular – blankets. Since 1966, this blanket factory is the last of its kind to produce them in the whole of Portugal. During the summer time, the thick and long “greasy wool” of the local sheep is spun and woven on an old handloom. From here it goes to the scouring machine, where it is washed and pressed into felt. Afterwards, it proceeds into the carding machine, which aligns the fibres, goes on to be stretched and is left under the sun to dry. There is no other way to obtain these thick and very warm blankets, available both in white and in a coloured pattern, with a distinctive long thread.
